A new National Education Service, fair funding for Cornwall schools up to at least the national average, and the reintroduction of maintenance grants.

As an educator and a mum to children at school in the constituency I am passionate about our plans for a National Education Service. Our local schools have suffered funding cuts of hundreds of pounds per pupil, adult education has been hit by severe cuts and the closure of Sure Start centres across Cornwall is a scandal. I will bring funding for schools in Cornwall up to at least the national average, fight for a properly funded new National Education Service with free education for all, from cradle to grave, and the reintroduction of maintenance grants.

Austerity is the idea that Cornish School children should be made to pay, for a global financial crisis by denial of resources, limiting life chances and going hungry. While the city bankers who caused it were never held to account. That is a choice made by the Conservative and Lib Dem parties. I chose something different, something that works well in other countries and will work for us. To invest in our economy and build a better world. I hope you do too.

Action I have taken

I listened to parents and campaigners for Falmouth school, when neither the trustees or our Tory MP would intervene after a terrible OFSTED report highlighted leadership failures. The parents and children deserved no less. I will always listen and act as your MP.

“We had to buy our own pens, pencils and glue for the children as they were in such short supply and the school had run out of budget. Mental health support has also been very very limited, with some children waiting several years until intervention.”
