The MP for Falmouth and Truro has been criticised by Jennifer Forbes.
A Cornwall MP has been slammed for suggesting it is ‘shameful’ to claim benefit cuts have driven people to suicide.
Sarah Newton accused critics of “deliberately misusing data” to say Tory welfare reforms are driving people to death, reports the Mirror.
The MP for Truro and Falmouth told MPs:
“The Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Professor Gina Radford, has said the APMS does not show any causal link between being on benefits and suicidal thought or behaviour.
“The survey findings indicate certain associations – but they do not indicate causality.
“Now you may not want to take my word for it.
“But are you seriously, seriously doubting the word of the deputy chief medical officer?”
But Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Truro and Falmouth Jennifer Forbes tweeted:
“My opponent Sarah Newton says it’s ‘shameful’ to claim benefit cuts have driven people to suicide. Do you know people whose mental health has been affected? Please share your stories with me so I can raise with her.”
Ms Forbes’ tweet has had 90 comments, 347 retweets and 282 likes in 15 hours.
