Labour wants to keep a £1bn Royal Navy contract in Britain and the party says a chunk of that should come to Falmouth.

On Wednesday a Labour Opposition Day motion in the House of Commons will demand that a £1bn Royal Navy supply ship contract be offered to UK shipyards only.

They’ve called it as they are opposing Conservative plans to offer this enormous contract for building Royal Fleet Auxiliary Fleet Solid Support ships to international bidders too.

The government is ordering three new supply ships and Labour’s candidate for Falmouth is saying she wants to see Sarah Newton put Cornwall before party and back her suggestion that one of these ships be based at the Cornish port.

Jennifer Forbes says if Falmouth won part of the build contracts too it would secure well paid jobs in a deprived area for many years to come.
